The railway bridge over the Tisza River in Szolnok is located at chainage 1073 of the Szolnok–Szajol railway line section. It is the highest capacity railway crossing point on the river.
As commissioned by NIF Zrt., we prepared the detailed designs for the reconstruction of the bridge in 2012 and 2013, then we were commissioned to prepare supplementary detailed and technological designs by the successful contractor (TISZA-2013 Consortium).
According to plans, the superstructure of the river bridge is reconstructed: two stand-alone single-track truss bridges are constructed at a spacing of 6.6 m. The new superstructure is favourable from a design point of view: it has a parallel-beam through truss with symmetrical bracing, an orthotropic deck structure and a span of 2x96.96 m. The upper boom members of the truss are hat sections and the truss members are welded I-beams. The lower boom is assymmetrical and has composite action with the longitudinal beams, deck slabs and longitudinal ribs. The single-span, floodplain, web-plate deck bridges receive a new orthotropic deck braced with cross ribs.

MÁV Zrt. set the one-week period of track closure (5 to 11 October 2014) for the replacement of the superstructures and published this period in its international timetable two years in advance. Due to the fixed period and its practically impossible modification, the selected construction technology could not depend on the capricious flow regime of the Tisza River, the whether or any other factor that would frustrate it.
During the technological design process, we prepared all auxiliary structures, check calculations and the phase designs of the various operations required for the on-site assembly and longitudinal and cross pushing of the new superstructures, the reinforcement of the substructures and the dismantling of the old superstructure, as well as performed continued on-site design engineer’s supervision.

During the reconstruction of an existing bridge, one always has to adapt to countless inherent conditions and circumstances, which fundamentally determine the direction of design, the construction technologies applied and the auxiliary structures. This, too, gives an appleal to this engineering task, after all.
