Under priority No. 5 of the Transport Operative Programme (KÖZOP), Nemzeti Infrastruktúra Fejlesztő Zrt. implemented Phase I of the reconstruction of the Budapest–Esztergom railway line in 2013 and 2014, which included the refurbishment and development works of the railway line.

It was necessary to prepare supplementary designs for the implementation of Phase II of the reconstruction of the Budapest–Esztergom railway line. Part of it was awarded to UVATERV Zrt. under the title of ‘Preparation of supplementary designs for the implementation of Phase II of the reconstruction of the Budapest–Esztergom railway line, Part 2, 4. Approval and tender designs’ under a public procurement procedure. The following tasks formed part of the design contract:

Task 1: Establishment of a direct transfer connection between Angyalföld station and tram line 14;
Task 2: Construction of an intermodal hub at Esztergom station;
Task 3: Signalling system and telecommunications designs for the Piliscsaba–Esztergom railway line section;
Task 4: Designs required for the replacement of the Bécsi út level crossing.

FŐMTERV Zrt. was commissioned to prepare the designs required for the replacement of the Bécsi út level crossing. The details of this assignment can be summarised as follows:

Under Phase I of the refurbishment of the Budapest–Esztergom railway line, the Bécsi út level crossing is reconstructed as a level crossing, with two tracks instead of one in accordance with the railway development. However, peak hour road traffic (about 1,700 unit vehicles/hour) and the proposed peak hour railway traffic (10 trains/hour) made it necessary to construct a non-level crossing. Since the construction of the approach of Trunk Road No. 10 in the Capital is currently not included in the project plans of the Capital, the construction of the non-level crossing may be implemented only as part of the railway project. Therefore, it became necessary to prepare the designs of a 2x1-lane trunk road and the designs of the connected road network elements as Phase I of the 2x2-lane design of the approach of the previous Trunk Road No. 10 in the Capital. These project elements can be regarded as parts of the railway project.

The proposed road network consists of the following facilities:

The section of Trunk Road No. 10 between chainages 9+143.66 and 10+863.75 km (between the detailed design boundary for the Ürömi út roundabout and the junction of Bécsi út and Kocsis Sándor utca).In this section, Trunk Road No. 10 runs on a new route between Aranyhegyi patak (a brook) and the Budapest–Esztergom railway line. It has 2x1 lane representing Phase I of the fully completed 2x2-lane road, forming its right carriageway. The proposed design includes 3.50 m wide traffic lanes in accordance with the road category (B. III. a B.). The junctions proposed in the section have a design corresponding to 2x1 lane.

Kocsis Sándor utca with the proposed bus terminal: The street connects Testvérhegy in the 3rd District with Trunk Road No. 10 by road. It is a feeder road with 3.25 m wide traffic lanes in the inner areas, identical with the final, fully completed road.
Virágosnyereg utca (between Trunk Road No. 10 and Solymárvölgyi út): At present, it provides a road network connection between Csúcs-hegy and Trunk Road No. 10 included only in the layout plan. It is constructed as a service road with 3.0 m wide traffic lanes in the inner areas.

Aranyvölgy utca II (between chainages 0+000 and 1+300.76 km): it is a secondary trunk road with 3.25 m wide lanes in the inner areas. It is identical with the fully completed road.

Pomázi út junction and associated road network, with the following roads (connection between Aranyhegyi út and Pomázi út for the railway flyover proposed in another project, junction branches of the Pomázi út junction, Aranyvölgy utca I and Törökkő utca)
The designs of the following engineering structures were prepared for the road network elements:

  • Bridge over Aranyhegyi patak at junction branch ‘A’ of the Pomázi út junction;
  • Covering Aranyhegyi patak at the Bécsi út junction;
  • Bridge over Aranyhegyi patak at Virágosnyereg utca;
  • Pedestrian and bicycle subway under the proposed Trunk Road No. 10;
  • Bridge over the Budapest–Esztergom railway line before the Üröm roundabout junction.

Major utility design tasks associated with the proposed road network:

The replacement of telecommunications lines was required in the design section on lines belonging to the ELMŰ–ÉMÁSZ Communications Network, the Invitel Zrt. and NSN TraffiCOM Kft. Communications Network, and the network of Magyar Telekom Nyrt.

The replacement of power lines (10 kV and 0.4 kV networks) affects several parts of the design area. New public lighting is constructed in Bécsi út, Aranyvölgyi út and at the junction of Pomázi út and Aranyhegyi út.

Replacement of water mains: A DN 800 principal water main was replaced along the line of Pomázi út and Aranyhegyi út and in Törökkő utca. A DN 200 AC water main and the sections of DN 100 KPE and DN 160 KPE pipes affected by road construction were replaced in Aranyhegyi út and Aranyvölgy utca. A DN 200 pheroidal graphite cast iron water pipe was removed at the junction of Bécsi út and Kocsis Sándor utca.

Gas mains: A DN 200 HA gas main and a DN 300 HA (FŐGÁZ) gas main were replaced along the line of Pomázi út and Aranyhegyi út in Törökkő utca. The replacement of the gas mains of FŐGÁZ also affected the junction of Óvár utca and Aranyvölgy utca, the junction of Bécsi út and Kocsis Sándor utca, and Solymár köz in the vicinity of the proposed Üröm railway stop. Gas mains owned by TIGÁZ were replaced on the north side of Aranyhegyi patak, in Virágosnyereg utca and at the pier of the road bridge over the proposed railway line B5.

Land drainage – brook training of Aranyhegyi patak:

In connection with road construction required within the context of replacing the Pomázi út railway flyover and the Bécsi út level crossing, our plan also includes the training of bed sections affected by engineering structures crossing the bed of Aranyhegyi-patak. Bed training was necessary at the Pomázi út junction, at the engineering structures in Kocsis Sándor utca and Virágosnyereg út, and along degraded bed sections.
